The Challenge

Making a local café-bar impossible to overlook

A café-bar's website needs to do one job well: make visiting feel like the obvious next step. Whether someone discovers Café Bardin through a local search, a tourist tip, or a social media post, the site needs to instantly communicate atmosphere, signal quality, and make it easy to find what they're looking for.

Café Bardin serves a genuinely mixed crowd: Spanish locals who know the neighbourhood and English-speaking expats and tourists drawn to Alicante's city centre. That meant the site needed to work equally well in both languages, with full page parity across home, menu, events, and contact. Not a watered-down second version, but a complete bilingual experience.

The team also needed to be able to keep menus up to date without waiting on a developer. Dishes and prices change seasonally, and making menus downloadable PDFs that the team could swap out directly was the right call. No CMS overhead, no unnecessary complexity; just a fast, well-crafted site they could actually own.

Our Approach

Our framework for success

Step 1

Product Workshop

We started with a product workshop to define the brief, align on audiences, and establish the right scope for the project.

We mapped out the two core customer segments (Spanish locals and English-speaking expats and tourists) and defined what the site needed to communicate for each. This gave us a clear content architecture and page structure before any design work began.

Step 2

Information Architecture

With the audiences and scope defined, we structured the site's content and navigation before touching any screens.

We mapped the page hierarchy across both languages, defined how menu, events, and contact content would be organised, and ensured the bilingual structure was logical and consistent from the start.

Step 3

Wireframing & Prototyping

With the strategy defined, we wireframed every core user flow across both languages: home, menu browsing and PDF downloads, event listings, and contact.

Interactive prototypes allowed us to validate the experience in English and Spanish and ensure the bilingual structure was intuitive before committing to high-fidelity design.

Step 4

User Interface Design

The design needed to feel warm, local, and effortlessly stylish, reflecting the atmosphere of the café itself.

We developed a custom visual system using Caveat for a handwritten brand feel, Crimson Pro for editorial headings, and Inter for clean UI text.

Applied across all pages in both languages, the result is a consistent, character-rich experience that works equally well on mobile and desktop.

Step 5

Website Development

We built the site as a lean, performant static site using HTML, CSS, Bootstrap 5, and SASS: the right choice for a local venue that needed speed and reliability without CMS complexity.

Menus are served as downloadable PDFs across three categories (food, cocktails and spirits, and menu of the day) in both languages.

An event banner above the nav can be activated for upcoming events, and Google Analytics GA4 tracks site performance and customer behaviour.

Step 6

Search Engine Optimisation

For a local venue, organic search is the primary discovery channel, especially for English-speaking tourists and expats searching in their own language.

We built SEO in from the start: properly structured HTML, localised pages with correct hreflang for each language, an auto-generated sitemap, and optimised metadata across every page. The bilingual setup means Café Bardin captures searches in both English and Spanish, from both local and visiting customers.

Step 7

Generative Engine Optimisation

As more tourists and expats turn to AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini to find places to eat and drink in Alicante, we ensured Café Bardin's content is structured and authoritative enough to appear in AI-generated recommendations.

GEO positions the café for the next generation of local discovery, capturing customers who never click a traditional search result but act directly on what an AI tool suggests.

Our Impact

A fast, bilingual digital home that drives real footfall

Café Bardin now has a digital presence that does justice to what the venue actually is: a welcoming, well-run café-bar in the heart of Alicante.

English-speaking visitors, expats, and locals can all find the café, browse the menus, check what events are on, and get in contact, in their own language, on any device. The team manages their menus independently by replacing PDF files, with no developer involvement needed.

Questions about Café Bardin

For a local café-bar, a static HTML/CSS site built with Bootstrap is the right tool for the job. It loads fast, requires no server-side infrastructure, and has no moving parts that can break.
